Bill Hull

MESA, ARIZONA-On July 10, 2011, William (Bill) Robert Hull, 78, passed away at the home of his daughter in Mesa, Arizona.  He valiantly fought the aggressive cancer that invaded his body, but finally lost the battle while surrounded by loved ones.

Bill was born on December 29, 1932, in Ogden, Weber County, Utah, to Robert Rigby Hull and Grace Evelyn Bailey.  The third of seven children, Bill was the oldest son and took that responsibility to heart as he watched over and protected his family throughout his life.  Bill graduated from Ogden High School and attended Weber College for a short time.  He attended Utah Agricultural College (now Utah State University) in Logan, Utah, where he was the star Center of the basketball team.  There he met his beautiful wife, Jean Bateman, and they were married on May 29, 1953, in the Salt Lake L.D.S. Temple.  Bill said that Jean has been the driving, supportive arm for good in his life.

Bill graduated from Utah Agricultural College in 1954 and then attended Stanford University in Palo Alto, California, where he earned his Physical Therapy degree.  He served as 2nd and 1st Lieutenant in the U.S. Army Medical Service Corp in Darnstadt, Germany, from 1955 to 1957.  Bill and Jean lived a short time in Ogden, Utah, and Sunnyvale, California, until they moved to Pocatello, Idaho, in 1960 where they lived the rest of their life together.  Bill was the first Registered Physical Therapist in Pocatello, Idaho, and worked hard to build his practice.  He immersed himself as a member of the community and was a member of Rotary Club.  He loved his profession of service and had a hand in healing many people who are still close friends to this day.

Bill was extremely active and loved life.  He valued the camaraderie he had with friends and family through work, tennis, basketball, hunting, fishing, camping, church and community service.  Bill, as a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, served in many leadership positions, including Bishop and High Council.  The calling closest to his heart was as a Scout Master.  He believed the soul of a boy was priceless, and he gave of himself 100 percent to the nurturing of helping young boys become men and great leaders.  He changed many lives through his love and tireless service.  Bill was a Wood Badge leader and was awarded the Silver Beaver.

Most of all, Bill was a man of high integrity and believed a promise and handshake was worth more than a written contract.  He was a noble father and faithful husband, and his family meant everything to him.  He has left an honorable legacy for his children and grandchildren.

Bill is survived by his wife, Jean Bateman; his children Robert Edward (Shannon) Hull of Auburn, Washington, Kristin Kay (Dean) Cook of Mesa, Arizona; Janet Sue Hull of Mesa, Arizona, and Karen Jean McFarland of West Jordan, Utah; twelve grandchildren; three sisters and two brothers.  He was preceded in death by his parents and oldest sister.

Funeral services and celebration of life will be held on Saturday, July 23, 2011, at 3:00 p.m. in the L.D.S. Bonneville Park Ward building, 135 South 7th Avenue, Pocatello, Idaho.  Family will receive friends beginning at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday at the church.  Burial will have taken place in the Hooper, Utah City Cemetery on Friday, July 22, 2011.

The family expresses deep gratitude to Hospice of the Valley of Mesa, Arizona, for the tender care they gave Bill the last two weeks of his life.  In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to: Hospice of the Valley, 777 W. Southern Ave, Suite 301, Building C, Mesa, AZ 85210.

I was saddened to read of Bills death. You have my most sincere sympathies. I have known Bill since I was a CNA at Eastgate Nursing Home back in the late 70′s. He was such an excellent teacher of proper body mechanics. Just being in his presence brought a sense of security and warmth. I must say that his smile and laugh could brighten even the darkest of days. The photo you have of him here is beautiful and totally captures his humor, warmth, and what I can only attribute to the spirit of God working through him. I am blessed that he crossed my path several times in my working profession. Erin Read

Dear Jean and the Hull Family. Our hearts are heavy at the loss of Bill, our friend and exemplar. As I look at Bill’s contribution to my life and to the lives of other scouts privileged to know him, he set the standard for compassion, kindness, and dedication, and for service as a scout leader. Our greatest tribute to Bill is our attempt to follow in his footsteps and to reflect his life in ours. Any accolade or achievement that is ours bears the signature of his example. Truly, this mentor was a skilled artisan in fashioning men from mere boys, and leaders from unruly scouts, using just the tools of his time, love, and genuine interest in each boy. We treasure our experiences with “Brother Hull” and love him dearly for the critical role he played in our lives. I cannot thank the Lord enough for Bill’s influence in my own life. At this difficult time, you are in our thoughts and prayers.

We are deeply saddened to learn of Bill’s passing, and it wasn’t fair that he had to battle the dreaded cancer! Bill was one of our heroes in our Pocatello Rotary Club and it was always a pleasure to work with him on different projects. He was a true inspiration to all of us and we were proud to know him! Know that the thoughts and prayers of many are with the family now.

    Dear Kristin and Family,

I’m so sorry to hear about your father. Bill is a big reason I’m a physical therapist. I was his aide for awhile at the hospital. He used to let me come to his outpatient clinic and use his whirlpool and other equipment following my frequently sprained ankle episodes during basketball season. He was an inspiration as I watched him treat patients. His obvious love of his work and the apparent appreciation his patient had for his skills and caring made me very interested in becoming a physical therapist. His example and encouragement made all the difference in my choosing to be a physical therapist.

Your father is a wonderful man to whom I will always be grateful for his caring, mentoring and friendship. May God bless and comfort you in this time of great loss.

    Highest Regards,

Dear Kristen and Hull Family –

It has been many years since my direct association with Kristen and your family as it has been since our high school days spent at Poky High.

My sister, Kathy, was actually closer friends to your family than I; however, I wanted to be sure to send my heartfelt condolences to you at this time of loss of your sweet father.

Kathy spoke often of how much she loved your family and enjoyed her friendship with Kristen, and I know I speak justly for her in sending this message of love and apprecition for each of you!

May our Father in Heaven bring comfort to your lives as you move forward in life.

Respectfully, Kathy and Kelly Beery (SPARROW/BASTOW)

It is so hard to believe that our dear, gentle “teddy bear” is not here any longer. His occasional phone calls with Amway updates and positive perspective were such a welcome.
His loving gift of hopefulness and his gentle manner with the physical therapy of my knee surgery recovery will always remain in our fond memories of Bill. May your fond memories and deep faith carry you through the months and years ahead. Jean, we have thought of you often in the past few months. You are in our prayers.
Remember, he loved carrot cake. So any time you have carrot cake, Bill will be a part of that celebration!

    Jean and family,

I was very sorry to learn that Bill had passed away. He was truly a great man that left powerful memories and touched the lives of many people. I remember as a young boy being awed from afar by what seemed to be unimaginable height and extraordinary talents. I am most happy to have gotten to know him better after my family moved into your ward – his influence certainly went far beyond the basketball and tennis courts. As I’m sure you do, I look forward with faith to a happy reunion.
