Pocatello – Raeola Jensen Rhead, 84, passed away on Friday, February 17, 2012, in Pocatello, Idaho, after a long fulfilling life and has now joyfully joined her loved ones who have long awaited her return. She was born on October 23, 1927, in Shelley, Idaho, to Marple Beaumont Jensen and Gertrude Vivian Gardner Jensen.

She attended Shelley schools, graduating in 1945. She completed a cosmetology course and began working as a beautician with her mother and sister Wyonna. Raeola also worked as a beautician for Nalders Funeral Home in Shelley. She married Douglas McFarland Rhead on October 23, 1945, and loved and raised ten children.

She worked at the Army Commissary in Fort Knox, Kentucky, where Doug was stationed in World War II. She made a comment that the prisoners of war were very respectful and pleasant. After Douglas’s release from the military, they moved back to Grandpa Rhead’s farm in Woodville. Three years later they relocated to Rupert, Idaho, where they began farming potatoes. This farming career led them from Woodville to Rupert, to Blackfoot, California, Oregon, and finally to Bannock Creek west of Pocatello. Besides raising ten children, she participated in every aspect of the farming life, working side by side with everyone else.

Raeola was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and served in the Primary, Relief Society, Young Women, and Cub Scouts. She so enjoyed the companionships and friendships from those activities.

At the age of 57, she attended the College of Southern Idaho in Twin Falls, Idaho, and graduated in 1986 at the age of 59 with a degree in Medical Terminology. Soon after and until her retirement, she worked at Bannock Memorial Hospital in the Medical Records office.

She is survived by Douglas, children Ronald (Becky), Kent (Mary Jo), Linda Rasmussen, Randy (Donetta), Sandra (Kevin) Robbins, Richard (Cindy), Stephen, Deborah, Ronda Johnson, Kevin (Lois); 37 grandchildren, 64 great-grandchildren, and 2 great-great grandchildren, and a very large extended family. She is also survived by two brothers LeOrnal (Helen) Jensen and Ronal Bernell Jensen, and by one sister Joyce Thomason.

Raeola was preceded in death by her parents and siblings, Wendell Jensen, Wyonna Kruse and Nida Keefer; and son-in-law Wayne Rasmussen.

We will miss her so; her twinkly eyes filled with laughter at a good joke, her smiles watching her kids joking banter among themselves, the grand kids and great-grand kids play, giggling at the animated toys she accumulated, her wry sense of humor and quick “come-backs,” and even the surly look she had sometimes when you knew she wasn’t quite happy with you. A plaque given to her which always made her smile when read said “I love you more today than yesterday! Cuz yesterday you really pissed me off.”

The family would like to extend their gratitude to Highland Hills Assisted Living and Guardian Hospice for their love and care of our mother.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, February 24, 2012, at the Highland 7th Ward LDS Chapel, 2000 S. Fairway, Pocatello. A viewing will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. on Friday, February 23, 2012, at Colonial Funeral Home, 2005 S. Fourth Ave. Pocatello, and 10 to 11 a.m. prior to the services at the church. Burial will follow at Fielding Memorial Park in Idaho Falls.

Arrangements are under the direction of Colonial Funeral Home, 2005 S. Fourth Ave. Pocatello. Condolences may be sent to the family on-line at www.colonialfuneralhome.com.

POCATELLO – Ruth Elvona Ormond, 98, passed away Wednesday, February 15, 2012 at the Portneuf Medical Center in Pocatello, Idaho.
Ruth lived all 98 years in beautiful Idaho. Born in La Belle, Idaho to Orian and Elva Smout, Ruth graduated from Rigby High School in 1933. She married Enos Vernal Ormond June 21, 1933 in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Logan Temple. Ruth and Vernal met at a church dance when she was 16 and he was 18. They dated three years mainly attending dances. These were the early years of the Depression. Movies were 25 cents; candy bars, 5 cents; popcorn, 5 cents. They could attend a movie for less than a dollar, but Ruth said dollars were hard to get since work and money were scarce.
Ruth and Vernal farmed in Clark, Rigby and Monteview, Idaho. Through the years they raised grain, hay, cattle, potatoes, and children. Farming was a family affair. In addition to their money crops, Ruth and Vernal had fruit trees, a vegetable garden and a beautiful flower garden. They always shared their produce with family and friends.
In 1975 Ruth and Vernal moved to Moreland, Idaho where Ruth continued to work in a Family History Library, substitute in the Snake River High School Library, make quilts, paint with oils and pastels, and make new friends. Ruth and Vernal served in the Idaho Falls Temple baptistery for nine years.
Ruth’s mind was sharp even as her body failed. The Marshall Public Library supplied her with reading material, which she always appreciated. She loved reminding them that she did not need the large print! For Christmas 2010 she received a laptop computer from her family and tried her best to keep up with e-mails at age 97.
Vernal passed away April 21,1998. Ruth is survived by her children, Gayle Moore (Ralph, deceased) of Nampa, Idaho; Errol Ormond (Jacquelyn) of Pocatello, Idaho; Steve Ormond (Sherry) of Burley, Idaho, and a sister, Arlenna Hoopes. Ruth enjoyed the love and respect of 14 grandchildren and 27 great grandchildren. In addition to Vernal, Ruth was preceded in death by a daughter, Margaret; another daughter who was stillborn; her parents; two sisters and a brother.
Ruth’s family gratefully acknowledges the care and concern of the staff at Caring Hearts Assisted Living Center. Daren West was always patient and attentive along with others who Ruth called her “girls.” Ruth had a comfortable home at Caring Hearts for almost four years.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the L D S Humanitarian Fund or the Patron Temple Attendance Fund.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, February 22, 2012, at the Blackfoot West Stake Center, 101 N. 900 W, with Bishop Randy Lee officiating. A visitation will be held one hour prior to the funeral at the church. Burial will follow services at the Rigby Pioneer Cemetery.

He was the youngest of five siblings. His childhood was filled with opportunites to learn as his father taught him carpentry, farming, mechanics, and handiman skills. As a youth he was very entreprenurial. He raised and sold rabbits, delivered newspapers, scrapped Model Ts, and helped out on the farm where he learned a love of animals. His passion for animals continued all through his life.

POCATELLO – Kathleen “Kay” L. (Plourd) Austin, 92, passed away on Monday, February 6, 2012.
Kay was born on April 5, 1919, on her uncle’s chicken farm in Westfield, MA. to Michael Edward and Catherine (Aylward) Plourd. Her childhood was spent in Springfield, MA. Her family was French Canadian and Irish Catholic. She married a Protestant. Life was never dull.

Kay and Edward “Eddie” James Austin married on August 30, 1940. With Eddie’s military life and career advancements they lived in numerous places before retiring in Harwich, MA on Cape Cod, their dream home. After many joy-filled years there together, Eddie died on September 3, 1991.

She helped organize the first polio vaccinations in the Portland, ME; Greenland, NH; and Sudbury, MA schools. She also assisted in the eye exams given to school children. As her sons grew she organized a rifle club and helped many learn gun-safety in Sudbury, MA.

Kay stayed active. Weekends with extended family were filled with boating, waterskiing, Feebee, and poker. At home she played Bridge with friends. She enjoyed gardening and watching birds as they passed through her yard on their migratory route. She created beautiful art with her cross-stitch table cloths, crewel embroidered wall hangings, and hand-painted porcelain. An avid reader, she had a quick wit and was always ready with a sarcastic comeback for her family, friends, and caregivers.

After years near her oldest son, Kay moved to be near her younger son’s family in Idaho in 2004. She briefly lived in a condo on her own, but Macular Degeneration of her eyesight and poor health required her to relocate to an assisted living community.

She is survived by her son James (Carole Ann) Austin of Orange, MA and son John (Anna) Austin of Pocatello, ID; 6 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

She is preceded in death by her parents, infant son Matthew Austin, and her 7 brothers, and 4 sisters.

Kay’s family would like to thank the staff at Rosetta Assisted Living and Dr. Lassere for their kindness and care of their mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother.

A graveside service will be held at a later date at the Massachusetts National Cemetery in Bourne.
