Our beloved Doreen "Grandma Newt" Nelson, 84, of Chubbuck, ID, peacefully passed away from natural causes on October 26, 2015 in Pocatello. She was born in March 1931, at the home of her maternal grandparents near Red Rock Pass, south of Downey Idaho. She was the oldest of four children born to Richard and Sarah "Ivy" Woodland.

At a young age, the family moved to the Inkom, Idaho area, where Doreen grew up, attending school in Inkom, and graduating from Inkom High School in 1949. That same year she met and married Nylan "Newt" Nelson, and they spent their married life living in Pocatello. Doreen and her family were sealed in the Idaho Falls LDS Temple in July 1966. They celebrated their 53rd anniversary before Newt passed away in 2003. Doreen and Newt had five children, Karen (Dan) Nuckols, Idaho Falls, Kirk (Barbara), Riverside, Rick (Cindy), Erda, Utah, Larry, Chubbuck, and Kristine (deceased in 2007).

Doreen worked several jobs in her early married years, but was primarily a stay at home mom, until her children were raised. She then managed the King's Food Host Restaurant for several years, before becoming the cafeteria manager at AMI for many years, retiring at age 65. After retirement, she was pleased to travel with Newt, and a group of surviving veteran Marine Corps buddies and their wives, to Iwo Jima in the Pacific to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the WWII battle in which he fought.

Doreen was active in the LDS church throughout her life, having served in many capacities in the Primary and Relief Society. She enjoyed attending the temple, family history, quilting, crocheting and sewing. However, her special talent was being an excellent cook. She made the best lasagna, cinnamon rolls, banana bread and pies of anyone we knew. She enjoyed sharing her treats with family, friends and neighbors. Doreen's children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren were her greatest joy. She has a deep love of her Savior.

Doreen was preceded in death by her husband; daughter; parents; and a younger sister, Olive Hawkley. She is survived by her four children; 10 grandchildren, Brian, Matt, Marcus, Alyce, Craig, Tony, Rachel, Taysha, Tianna, Jessica; 12 great-grandchildren; a brother, Dee Woodland, Pocatello; and sister, Gayla Corminay, Denver.

The family would like to thank staff at Portneuf Medical, Quinn Meadows Rehab Center and Alliance Home Health for their kindness.

Funeral services, with Bishop Robert Briscoe officiating, will be held on Saturday, October 31, 2015 at 11 am at the LDS Canterbury Ward, 4890 Whitaker Rd, Chubbuck, ID 83202, with a viewing for one hour prior to the service.

Family will meet with friends on Friday, October 30, 2015 from 6-8 pm at Colonial Funeral Home 2005 S. 4th Ave. Pocatello, Idaho 83201, 208-233-1500.

Interment will take place, later Saturday afternoon, at the Treasureton Cemetery, 9542 Treasureton Rd. (10 miles north of Preston) Preston, Idaho 83263.

Dear Family,

I worked at AMI for many years and remember your Mother well. She was always hard-working and kind. Everyone enjoyed here cooking, especially her Thursday morning cinnamon rolls!

God bless you!

Larry, Nancy and I are sorry to hear about your mom. She was a sweet lady. When we lived on Lavine she used to take walks past our house and some times we would talk with her when she went by.

We send our condolences, Kerry and Nancy Cameron

I was so sorry to hear of your mom's passing. When we lived on the El Rancho hill I was Doreen's visiting teacher partner for many years. She was also my "walking buddy" we shared many good memories as we exercised. I have been gone from Pocatello for 15 years but think of her often. She was a special lady!7

Sorry to read of your Mother's passing. You had talked about her multiple health issues but it is still not easy to lose one's Mother. God bless you with great memories that will provide you with needed comfort.

Dear Family,

Thanks for letting her be a grandma to many others that were not her own. I was her home teacher for many years and my whole family loved her dearly. What a sweet, kind, and gifted woman.

Hello Family, we're so sorry to hear about your mom. What a sweet person and so kind to my mom Carma. She called her every Sunday to see how she was and she so looked forward to the visits. Our love is with you all.

Dear Family of Doreen,
I was privileged to know Doreen for the past two years. How she loved her family! You were her whole life. She prayed for you, rejoiced in your triumphs, and sorrowed for your sad times. I feel I know many of you because of all the nice things she said about you. Doreen taught me many lessons about enduring to the end and keeping on. She will be missed.
