Mervin Stanley Moon
November 5, 1915 - February 26, 2010
Mervin Stanley Moon, 94, of Pocatello, passed away Friday, February 26, 2010 at a local care facility. Mervin was born the oldest of 3 children of Leonard William and Ethel Florence Moon in Oakesdale, Washington.

He moved to Pocatello with his family when he was about 4 years old and attended school in a one room school house at Hoot owl in the Buckskin area. Mervin fibbed about his age to get employment at the UPRR. He worked for over 50 years for the Railroad retiring as a machinist. Mervin saw many changes in the Railroad starting out working on the big steam locomotives and all the way through the diesel locomotive era.

Mervin married LaVera Simmons in November 9, 1939. They had no children of their own but always assisted with raising their niece and nephews.

Although he had no children and grandchildren of his own Mervin cherished the relationships he had with his nephews and their children, like they were his own children and grandchildren. LaVera preceded him in death in 1999.

He was a member of the Machinist Union. He enjoyed gardening, rock-hounding, and the out of doors. He also loved exploring and fishing the mountain streams of Idaho. He was an expert hunter and hunted well into his 70’s. Mervin was a happy person always with a twinkle in his eye and a smile on his face and a big flirt even up until the very end.

He is survived by his nephews, Gary (Joydean) Sorensen, Pocatello, Ivan Sorensen, Chubbuck, a niece, Karen Simmons, a sister, Myrtle Parker, Medford, Oregon, great-nieces, Kirsten and Megan, and a cousin LaWanda Little. He was preceded in death by his wife, LaVera and a sister Hazel Simmons.

A memorial graveside service will be held at Restlawn Cemetery at 3 PM, Wednesday, March 3, 2010. Arrangements are under the direction of Colonial Funeral Home, 2005 S. 4th Ave. Pocatello. Online condolences may be sent to the family at www.Colonial-FuneralHome.com.
